In the Name of Allah, All-Merciful, Most Merciful
Introduction
Have you ever thought about death, have you thought about why you die? Death is the most certain thing in life. What is the point of living a life of an average of 60 years and then meeting death? Indeed for anyone of good conscience this question is one of the most important of their lives. It is not enough to say and think what is common ‘we are just here so lets make the most of it’. To know the answer is actually simple, and it will be worth pondering over a few points. In the Qur’an God informs us that this life in this world is not the real home of man but the world of the hereafter, and one of the greatest evidences of this for man is that one day he will die. When we take this into consideration it is obvious that the life of this world is a temporary test in which we are constantly tested by Allah, till Our Death. Death is actually a doorway to the real world where everyone will live eternally, but there is a difference, those who in this temporary world followed Allah’s Religion and Obeyed His Commands will be Blessed with Paradise but those who thought that this world is all that existed and that Death would make an end of them forever, and disobeyed Allah’s commands, will be in Hellfire, Eternally.
He Who created Death and Life, to test which of you is best in action. He is the Almighty, the Ever-Forgiving (67/2)
Inevitability of Death
If one ponders very carefully and sets aside all prejudices, one must surely come to the conclusion that death is a planned and pre-ordained event created by Allah, although this is an obvious fact many people find it difficult to understand, made worse by living distant from the guidance of the Qur’an; for this reason it will be worth going over a few points even though they may seem obvious; if a few people every now and again died and the rest would carry on living we may think differently, but the fact that everybody at a time has died in the past and continues to die today and will continue to die in the future, without doubt shows a certain and planned pattern, that is, death was ordained by man’s Creator Allah, We have decreed death for you and We will not be forestalled… (56/60)
Once comprehending that death was created for a reason by Allah one must necessarily and inevitably think carefully about this world and what they are doing, they must realise that they have only one chance to please Allah and follow His path. Once they are brought before their Lord on the day of judgement after their death they will no longer have any chance to go back and have a second chance no matter how much they plead with Allah, because Allah had given them enough warning and sent down His Book from Himself ‘The Qur’an’, not only that but those who already believed in Allah gave them plenty of warning and informed them about the Perfected Religion of God, Islam. Every self will taste death. You will be paid your wages in full on the Day of Rising. Anyone who is distanced from the fire and admitted to the Garden has triumphed. The life of this world is just the enjoyment of delusion. (3/185)
Fear of Death & Avoiding Morbid Talks
Another of the greatest evidences that there is more than this life is the fear of death, the very fact that we fear death and fear that we will become nothing is enough to frighten us. This fear shows that the mind or the self does not think it rational that this life is all there is and that you will die very soon without any purpose. Especially in a society far from the guidance of the Qur’an, people try to avoid thinking or talking about death because it reminds them that they will soon become nothing once they are dead, what makes this thought even worse in a society distant from the teachings of the Qur’an is that people believe that this life is all there is and so any thought of death which brings home the reality of the purposelessness of their lives makes them more uncomfortable and for many people much sadness. For example, we see and hear quite often how people who have grown into old age and have realised the inevitability of death asking some very important questions, which ideally they should have thought of earlier and perhaps even did but which they ignored. For example, if an old man looks back at his life and questions ‘what has my life really been all about?’ ‘now I’m going to die so what’s been the point? It is this very question and answer that the religion of Islam gave him yet at that time he had no time to be afraid of death or even think about it. Say: "Death, from which you are fleeing, will certainly catch up with you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the Unseen and the Visible and He will inform you about what you did!" (62/8)
Death is Not the End, it is a Doorway to the Real Life ‘The Hereafter’.
The life of this world is nothing but a game and a diversion. The abode of the Next World - that is truly Life if they only knew. (29/64) This verse reminds man that this life is temporary (for the sake of being tested by Allah) and that the real life is the Hereafter. So now that we have discussed this life and death, we will realise what a waste of our one chance in this world to please Allah is. Unlike the examination’s in life one cannot take another test prepared by Allah, of course through the course of ones life Allah gives his servants many chances (see below 35/37 emphasis given) to turn back from his erroneous ways and worship Him on the right path. It cannot be stressed enough about the preparation one must make for the real life in the hereafter, we only have one chance, once death comes upon us we will not get another chance. The time before our death is “so precious“, it is more worth than anything in this temporary world. For this reason one must strive to perfect themselves for Allah, so that when he meets his Lord on the day of judgement he will be able to enter paradise ‘The Home of the Righteous Believers’; They will enter Gardens of Eden where they will be adorned with gold bracelets and pearls, and where their clothing will be of silk. They will say, ‘Praise be to Allah Who has removed all sadness from us. Truly our Lord is Ever-Forgiving, Ever-Thankful: He who has lodged us, out of His munificence, in the Abode of Permanence where no weariness or fatigue affect us.’
But for those who disbelieve there will be the Fire of Hell. They will not be killed off so that they die and its punishment will not be lightened for them. That is how We repay every thankless man. They will shout out in it, ‘Our Lord! Take us out! We will act rightly, differently from the way we used to act!’ Did We not let you live long enough for anyone who was going to pay heed to pay heed? And did not the warner come to you? Taste it then! There is no helper for the wrongdoers. (35/33-37)
