The Qur’an is the only book today that can truly lead one to God’s way. God’s previous revelations have all been corrupted and tampered with. The Qur’an is God’s only uncorrupted revelation and is therefore the only book which will lead to success in this world and salvation in the hereafter. In one verse of the Qur’an God informs man that He will guard and preserve His final revelation Himself, this is a great comfort for true believers in God, It is We Who have sent down the Reminder and We Who will preserve it. (15/9)
If man mixes his own ideals with God’s word it will only bring loss to those who perpetrate this and those who follow it, Woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say ‘This is from Allah’ to sell it for a paltry price. Woe to them for what their hands have written! Woe to them for what they earn. (2/79), for this reason it is a great wrong to tamper with God’s perfect word which He sends down for mans own benefit. In a verse of the Qur’an Allah informs us about the people who have received His Book previously; Do you not see those who have been given a portion of the Book being invited to let Allah’s Book be the judge between them? But then a group of them turn away. That is because they say, ‘The Fire will only touch us for a number of days.’ Their inventions have deluded them in their religion. (3/23,24); Allah informs us that the forgeries that those before have made in their own book/s have deceived them about their own religion, for example; many of them believe that if they are punished by Allah it will only be for a few days and then they will be allowed in paradise, They say, ‘The Fire will only touch us for a number of days.’ Say ‘Have you made a contract with Allah - then Allah will not break His contract - or are you rather saying about Allah what you do not know? (2/80,81)
In another verse of the Qur’an Allah informs us that a group from those who received His Books before are unlikely to follow God’s final and true religion Islam, because despite understanding their own books, they knowingly distorted them, Do you really hope they will follow you in faith when a group of them heard Allah’s Word and then, after grasping it, knowingly distorted it? (2/75)
Mercy and a Healing for Man
The Qur’an is a mercy and healing for mankind. In a verse of the Qur’an Allah explains that He has sent down the Qur’an as guidance, mercy and healing for what is in ones hearts or breasts; Mankind! Admonition has come to you from your Lord and also healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers. (10/57). If we ponder this verse carefully we can understand that one interpretation of …a healing for what is in the breasts… are all the mental and spiritual distresses man suffers caused by not adhering to the Qur’an in the first place, especially in this modern age. The only solution to all these problems and more is the guidance of Allah in the Qur’an. If man leads his life away from the awareness of Allah and His guidance then he is bound to suffer spiritual distresses aswell as distress in daily life. It is the duty of every person to use the understanding and intellect Allah has given to them, only then can they understand the Qur’an and reap its endless benefits in this life and for the hereafter. In one of many verses of the Qur’an Allah describes true believers as people who truly use their understanding and intellect; Those who listen well to what is said and follow the best of it, they are the ones whom Allah has guided, they are the people of intelligence. (39/18) A Book whose verses have been demarcated for people who know as an Arabic Qur’an. (41/3)
The Qur’an is Perceived Based on the Readers Intentions, Prejudices and Hostilities and this is a Miracle of the Book of Allah
The Qur’an gives man the most lucid proofs, similitude’s and evidences and questions him, forcing him to ponder and think, a quality most distinctive to true believers described in Surah Al-Imran; (3/191).
Despite this lucidity Allah informs us that some people will struggle to understand the Qur’an, this is perhaps because of their own weak faith, hypocrisy, or disbelief or because they bear hatred towards Allah’s true religion; When you recite the Qur’an, We place an obscuring veil between you and those who do not believe in the Next World. We have placed covers on their hearts, preventing them from understanding it, and heaviness in their ears. When you mention your Lord alone in the Qur’an, they turn their backs and run away.(17/45,46)
Among them are those who listen to you and then, when they leave your presence, say to those who have been given knowledge, ‘What was it he just said?’ They are those whose hearts Allah has sealed up and who follow their own desires.(47/16)
We have made the Qur’an easy to remember. But is there any rememberer there? (54/17)
The fact that some people can understand the Qur’an easily and yet some cannot is one of the miracles of the Book of Allah and His verses, Allah is not ashamed to make an example of a gnat or of an even smaller thing. As for those who believe, they know it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, ‘What does Allah mean by this example?’ He misguides many by it and guides many by it. But He only misguides the deviators. (2/26)
This unique characteristic of the Qur’an can be seen in yet another verse of the Qur’an in which Allah says the following; We send down in the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe: to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss. (17/82)
In the Qur’an itself Allah reminds people of intelligence (ulul albaab) to ponder the sings and verses of the Qur’an and take guidance from it. The following verse tells us this in the clearest manner; It is a Book We have sent down to you, full of blessing, so let people of intelligence ponder its Signs and take heed. (38/29)
For this reason Muslims should read as much of the Qur’an as is possible and then implement it in their lives, no matter which madhab (School of thought) they follow, for this is a command direct from the Qur’an.
In another verse of the Qur’an, Allah the Most High reminds us that the believers are those who follow the best of what they hear, this gives us a great example of the mentality of true believers; Those who listen well to what is said and follow the best of it, they are the ones whom Allah has guided, they are the people of intelligence. (39/18)
It is a Book We have sent down to you, full of blessing, so let people of intelligence ponder its Signs and take heed. (38/29)
